Paul McCain returns to the Philippines, and to more trouble than he could ever have imagined.
Seeking a quiet retirement he buys a hotel in Angeles City, popular with retired U.S. veterans because
thousands of American troops were stationed there during World War 2. He doesn’t know it, but the
local mafia, the Chinese triads also wanted the hotel and their boss, Charlie, is not pleased. When Paul
refuses to give it to him he does not take it well. Charlie begins a campaign of intimidation which
includes kidnapping, extortion, arson, and murder, but he doesn’t realise that Paul is made of much
sterner stuff, and this time he is not alone. A group of other retired U.S. marines join him to thwart the
evil, drug smuggling, gang. In desperation, Charlie kidnaps Paul’s girlfriend, threatening to kill her. He
will soon learn that it is probably not wise to threaten a U.S. marine.

Behind the scenes
Angeles city has long been known as the playground of the Philippines, many casinos, clubs, restaurants,
and girlie bars service the needs of the foreign soldiers stationed in the city. With the foreign money also comes, of course, the drugs. Rival gangs fight for the trade with many killings, but the Triads are the
most powerful. I have described Angeles exactly the way I experienced it. There is abject poverty, and
there is no rule of law – the police and judges are all in the pay of the triads, but if you are foreign or
wealthy (usually the same thing) you can live well, and not be bothered by the thugs.
