This man was an example to us all
I have been meaning to put some words into a meaningful order for this blog for a while now, but I am prompted to actually get on with it by the death this week of Nelson Mandela, an Icon of freedom and statesmanship in my youth.
I read his book, A long walk to freedom, a long time ago – I urge you to read it if you have not. It is insightful and spiritually uplifting. The great man’s influence spanned many decades both in and out of jail. There is no doubt that South Africa, and probably the world, would be a very different place today had it not been for his influence. Thank you Madiba.

Right. On to writing matters .
Here’s my assessment of 2013 – yes, let’s get it in before all the proper writers do!
For those who’ve missed my regular drivel – I’m back. I cannot promise (or threaten) a weekly contribution right now, but I’m still here – pounding the keys and annoying the ducks!
You know, the writing community are a wonderful caring and thoughtful bunch. Thanks to all my friends who have asked me 'why no blog posts?' The truth is just that sometimes life takes a turn which causes you to put something else at the top of your ‘to-do’ list.
It’s been an exciting, disappointing, stimulating, educating, but ultimately successful year. I republished ‘Deadly Election’ to a thunderous silence. Never mind, here we at Christmas with more than 37,000 downloads and more than a hundred mostly positive reviews – so I may be doing something right.
The key to selling books (apart from making sure your writing and cover are professional and polished in every way) is to write more books. I’m working on it! My only New Years resolution is to READ more in 2014 and I have invested in a Kindle to make that easier – I wish I had done it years ago - they are amazing – check them out HERE.
The facts are this. There are more than a thousand books published EVERY DAY now – and most of them will not sell more than a couple of books. Authors cannot expect to make much, if any, money. If you cannot afford for your work to be a labor of love, do yourself a favor and do NOT be sucked in by these thousands of ‘best-selling authors’ trying to sell you books, manuals and online courses designed to part you from your hard earned dollars with promises of ‘instant author success’ and other such enticing entreaties. Most are years out of date and greatly exaggerated if not downright lies.
