Westerners looking at the way the Philippines is governed start off by being incredulous about the waste, the corruption, the stupidity, the greed, the incompetence, the deceit…. The list goes on and on – I am amazed that the international community has now awarded these beautiful island an ‘investment grade’ status.
Perhaps they did not consult the hundreds of foreign businesses who have lost money there and pulled out, or the hundreds of foreigners who have lost their liberty or their lives there.
Today no one knows how much gold is mined – much of it goes undeclared. It is mostly dug out of the ground by hand, by small family concerns. Commercial foreign mining firms abandoned attempts to work in the Philippines because of local thieves and robbers, and the demands of greedy local and national politicians made their operations both dangerous and unprofitable. According to official Government figures, foreign investment In mining has halved since 2010.
For many years I have wondered how I, as a foreigner in the Philippines, can help. The only answer I have (and it is a poor one) is to write about the problems – in the hope that someone more powerful will one day do something about it.
My book, Deadly Election, deals with the lack of any real justice, political corruption and the other dangers there; you can find out more about it here –
SEE DEADLY ELECTION. It’s a good and exciting read, as well as opening your eyes about what really goes on there.
I am also in the middle of writing my second book – NINETY PERCENT – it deals specifically with the issues of illegal gold mining and gold smuggling. You can keep up to date with the progress on my book, and on other Philippine issue by registering here –

I am interested in any and all comments of the Philippines and living and doing business there – I will soon start a blog devoted just to that. Watch this space!

I may be getting a bit intense and political, but I have not forgotten my furry friends. Thank you for sending me funny pics of your pets - keep them coming!
Meet the author
Arthur Crandon is a lawyer, the boring office kind, not the exciting (and much better paid) courtroom type. He worked as a solicitor for a while before embarking on an interesting life overseas. He has spent most of his time in recent years in South East Asia, more recently in Hong Kong. Before that, Arthur lived and worked in the Philippine Islands.
He loves to fish, and play the piano – but spends most of his time writing, eating, drinking and sleeping
– usually, but not always, in that order.
His first book, Deadly Election, draws on his strange imagination and his
experiences, together with those of others, in a land that, beneath a veneer of civilisation, operates like the Wild West and is very
dangerous to innocent and gullible foreigners.
