CHOCOLATE – BACON – NAKED WOMEN – NAKED MEN
Did that do it? I hope so. It’s important this week as my blog is full of interesting stuff. If that didn’t grab your attention, off you go and surf ... don’t forget to clear the history!
You’re still here? Great. I’ve got lots to say today.
My writing and publishing journey continues, and I have a big message to all new authors and soon to be published writers out there. As well as hard work, and smart work, and lots of it there is one other thing that most of us (me included) do not want to do – that is GIVE IT TIME!!!
I remember when I pressed the button to publish my book last year on Createspace and Amazon – I felt and amazing sense of achievement, and checked my Amazon account every ten minutes – to keep track of all the sales that were sure to flood in.
I sold my first book after 14 days (Thanks. Mom) and waited and waited for more sales. I wondered what I had done wrong. I have discussed my technical issues in earlier blogs so I will not go into them again here. Today I am going to discuss emotional issues and the one virtue I lack (yes, only one!) – PATIENCE.
I am lucky, I do have dedication and determination, and a positivity which has resulted from overcoming some pretty ugly stuff in my life. Day after day sat staring at your Amazon account saying “No sales this period” does little for your confidence and esteem. It can really exercise your positivity muscles. In desperation, you check the Amazon sites in Estonia, India. France etc as well – with the same result.
What do you do? You can give up writing and go back to ferret breeding, frog collecting or teaching the dog to cook, or you can do what I did! I read ALL I could about selling books, social media, trends in reading – anything that I thought may help me to get readers to like me, my book and to buy it!
There is no way that I am a marketing or social media expert. All I want to do is pass on to you what I have done, because, after nearly a year – IT IS NOW BEGINNING TO WORK!
If you look at Twitter streams, Facebook timelines and most postings on other social media – most of them are of the – ‘buy my new book...’ ‘check out my book...’ type – and there are so many of them. I did this too – for a long time, and OK, I still do sometimes, but what I do MORE nowadays is to put a lot more THOUGHT into my tweets.
There is a Chinese proverb ‘don’t judge a man until you have walked a mile in his shoes’ – It is good advice. Because, by then, you are a mile away, and you have his shoes! Seriously, every time I do any social media marketing I now sit back and think – Would this interest me as a reader? Why would this make someone check out my book? How can I make this post interesting enough that they will click through to my book/blog/website?
This is beginning to pay off, but I have been doing it now for many months. It does NOT happen quickly. I do believe very much in all the advice on Author Branding, and Building a Platform. It’s all true and it does work, but it takes time. I am JUST BEGINNING now to get known as an author, to sell more books, to get interview requests etc.
One last piece of advice for today – and it’s to do with author branding. Work out what is DIFFERENT about you, or about your book. What might people find interesting. I have three things which perhaps people remember about me – I am a Lawyer, I live in Hong Kong, and I love Cats. Try to work out your own USP (Unique selling proposition) – yes, I worked in marketing once too.
That’s all for this week folks! (Bugs Bunny!) – I hope you will get time to follow my links and like me, friend me, and to check out my book – ‘Deadly Election’ on Amazon HERE, or a more in depth study of it HERE, and also to explore what I am going to do next HERE.
I HAVE JUST REVAMPED THE HOME PAGE OF MY SITE - DO PLEASE TAKE A LOOK AND LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK - CLICK HERE

As always there are the cats and their friends – where would we be without them – catless, that’s where! Take care and see you next week. Arthur.
I would also like to mention another new service aimed at helping new authors to get published – its free so why not check it out – here - Publishizer.com
